In 2015, I had the incredible opportunity to enter the Guggleton Farm Arts Young Artist of the Year Award, a competition hosted by a local gallery in my hometown of Somerset. At the time, I had just graduated from university and was 21 years old. This was a defining moment in my early artistic career, as it was my first involvement in a group exhibition. Little did I know that this experience would shape the trajectory of my career in profound ways.
The exhibition was held at Guggleton Farm Arts, a well-regarded space that fosters emerging talent and celebrates the work of young artists. Being part of this exhibition felt both exhilarating and humbling, as I was able to showcase my art in a professional setting for the very first time. The local community's support was overwhelming. From the gallery staff to fellow artists and visitors, I felt welcomed and encouraged to share my work with others.
The show lasted for a month, with the opening night featuring a private view and prize-giving ceremony. It was a nerve-wracking yet thrilling experience, being surrounded by such talented individuals and knowing that my work was on display for an audience. As the evening unfolded, I found myself in awe of the connections and conversations taking place around my artwork. It was a testament to the power of art to bring people together and evoke thought-provoking discussions.
To my great surprise, during the prize-giving ceremony, I was awarded Highly Commended. The recognition felt like a huge affirmation of the hard work and passion I had poured into my art. It was an unexpected honor and a moment of validation in the early stages of my career. What made the evening even more memorable was that, on the same night, I sold the piece that was exhibited to a local buyer. The sense of fulfillment that came from both the award and the sale was indescribable. It felt like a turning point, where my art was no longer just a personal pursuit but something that resonated with others in a meaningful way.
Since that exhibition, my work has evolved significantly. The pieces I created back in 2015 were reflective of my artistic beginnings, and I have since developed new styles, techniques, and concepts that are a far cry from what I first exhibited. My creative journey has been one of growth, experimentation, and reflection, leading me to the artist I am today. Because of this significant evolution in my work, I have chosen not to include images of the pieces I exhibited at the Guggleton Farm Arts Young Artist of the Year Award in this post. They represent a moment in time that is no longer reflective of my current practice, but I hold them in high regard for the role they played in my early development.
Looking back, the Guggleton Farm Arts Young Artist of the Year Award was a milestone that set the foundation for my artistic career. It marked the beginning of my public journey as an artist and ignited a passion for showcasing my work, engaging with audiences, and growing within the art world. The recognition I received was both humbling and motivating, and I am grateful for the community that supported me throughout that experience.
Reflecting on this part of my journey reminds me of how far I’ve come and how much more there is to explore.
