The Story:
The Spicebush Swallowtail is a master of disguise—its wing patterns mimic the Pipevine Swallowtail to ward off predators, yet up close it reveals a beauty all its own.
Charlotte chose to paint this butterfly with wings fully spread, capturing the intricate textures and jewel-like flashes of iridescent blue, speckled teal, and rust orange against velvety black. Set against the natural tone of raw linen, the butterfly seems to float—timeless, delicate, and unmistakably alive.
This piece is about contrast: light and dark, fragility and resilience, stillness and flight. It’s a tribute to the quiet, often unseen marvels of the natural world.

A note from Charlotte…
Charlotte painted the original Spicebush Swallowtail in January 2021 in her Bristol studio. It was later exhibited at The Waterton Gallery, London, as part of her Into the Light solo show, and is now sold. Charlotte’s wildlife work aims to evoke emotion, foster connection, and spark a sense of stewardship through beauty and storytelling.
