The Story:
Also known as Catocala fraxini, the blue underwing moth is rarely seen and easily missed—its forewings mimic tree bark so perfectly that it disappears into the landscape. But when disturbed, it flashes brilliant blue hindwings like a sudden secret revealed.
In this portrait, Charlotte focused on the moth at rest—where its intricate patterns and tones blend together in perfect camouflage. Each tiny scale and irregular marking is painted with patient attention, making this humble moth feel almost regal.
Blue Underwing is a celebration of the unseen, the hidden, and the extraordinary beauty that lies just beneath the surface.

A note from Charlotte…
Charlotte painted the original Blue Underwing Moth in 2021 in her Bristol studio. It was later exhibited at The Waterton Gallery, London, as part of her Into the Light solo show. Charlotte’s wildlife work aims to evoke emotion, foster connection, and spark a sense of stewardship through beauty and storytelling.
